Interview: Top US general confident in Afghans By: KABUL — The top commander of U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan believes government security forces have improved faster than expected and will be ready to take the lead in the 11-year-old war against the Taliban when foreign combat forces take a back seat this spring. Marine Gen. John Allen told The Associated Press that the main job over the next two years for the International Assistance Force — as the NATO-led troops in Afghanistan are called — will be to advise, train and build the capabilities needed for Afghan forces to go it completely alone. They will face their first test when the fighting season gets under way in the late spring and summer. During the harsh Afghan winter, snow often blocks roads and fighting dies down. The Afghan security forces, which have nearly reached their full strength of 352,000, still need much work to become an effective and self-sufficient fighting machine, but a vast improvement in their abilities was behind a decision to accelerate the timetable for putting them in the lead nationwide, Allen said. President Barack Obama announced earlier this month that the Afghans would take over this spring instead of late summer — a decision that could allow the speedier withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan. The Afghan troops "are further along in their capabilities than we had anticipated, and I'm very comfortable frankly with their being in the lead in 2013," Allen said in a recent interview ahead of his departure. "This is an acknowledgment of their capabilities." The general, who has led the military coalition for 19 months, is leaving Afghanistan on Feb. 10. The White House said it would nominate him to become the head of NATO forces in Europe after he was exonerated in a Pentagon investigation of questionable email exchanges with a Florida woman linked to the sex scandal that led his predecessor, David Petraeus, to resign as CIA director. Allen, 59, of Warrenton, Virginia, said the investigation was troublesome, but he was confident that the process would clear him. "I'll make no secret that it was on my mind, but my number one goals were the interests of the troops, the coherence of the campaign and doing all I could obviously to further our combined interests here," he said. "But it does weigh on you, and while it weighed on me it really weighed on my family, it really weighed on my family, and the findings ultimately were announced and I continue to move on." If confirmed by the Senate, Allen would succeed Navy Adm. James Stavridis in the NATO post. He would not comment on how quickly the remaining 66,000 U.S. troops would return home, or how many American soldiers will remain after the end of 2014, when all foreign combat troops are to leave Afghanistan — saying Obama will make that decision. "We are advising now, and for the foreseeable future and until the latter part of the spring we will be advising at the battalion level," Allen said, adding that the advising would progressively move up to larger formations until the work was completed. "This is in conjunction with the drawdown of our own forces and in a very measured way, in a way that the Afghans are familiar with and we are able to predict we will eventually move up to the corps level." Afghan troops already have taken the lead for security on territory holding 85 percent of the country's population of around 30 million. "In many respects they are already leading operations, 80 percent of operations across the country are being led by the Afghans right now. So I am confident that in this coming fighting season, where technically they will be in the lead across the country operationally, that they are ready and we will be in support of them," Allen said. "I think they are going to do fine this year and we will stay with them. There is much work still to be done." The Afghan lead in fighting has already become apparent in the casualty figures. U.S. troop deaths declined overall from 404 in 2011 to 295 in 2012. More than 2,000 U.S. troops and nearly 1,100 coalition troops have died here since the U.S. invasion in late 2001. Last year many of those deaths were at the hands of the Afghan forces they were partnered with or training. Deaths from so-called insider attacks — Afghan police and troops killing foreign allies — surged to 61 in 45 attacks last year compared with 2011, when 35 coalition troops were killed in 21 attacks By comparison, more than 1,200 Afghan soldiers died in 2012 compared to more than 550 in 2011, according to data compiled by the Washington-based Brookings Institution. Many are concerned that the Afghan forces will not be up to the task of securing the country after 2014. The size of the force will also have to be reduced after coalition forces leave because much of the funding for it will have dried up. At its summit in Chicago last May, NATO agreed on a fundraising goal to underwrite a force of about 230,000 that would cost about $4.1 billion annually. When Allen took over from Petraeus in July 2011, the war was in full force. But the tide was turning, and public opinion in the United States and in coalition countries was tiring of a lengthy conflict that was widely seen as propping up a corrupt and thankless Afghan government. In mid-2010, the United States had more than 100,000 troops and coalition forces totaled close to 150,000. The U.S. was spending billions of dollars on a costly counterinsurgency strategy that had all the hallmarks of nation-building. The Afghan army and police were rapidly growing thanks to a mostly U.S.-funded program that cost more than $20 billion, but their combat abilities did not match their numbers. "When I got here we had virtually no battalion level operations under way, and the brigade level operation was only an ambition. Today, every day, there are brigade and corps level operations going on across Afghanistan," Allen said. He said those operations were being planned, carried out and often supplied by the Afghans, with foreign troops there in a mostly advisory role. The improvements allowed Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai to announce the spring handover date earlier this month. Allen said the decision was made after the withdrawal last September of the 33,000 U.S. troops who were part of a surge announced by Obama in December 2009. In early 2012, Allen said he was grappling with the question of how many combat brigades he could carve out of the 68,000 troops that would remain in Afghanistan after the withdrawal, but the drawdown actually provided an opportunity to thrust Afghan forces in the lead. "The term that I used was they were better than we thought, more importantly they were better than they thought," he said. But the Afghan forces still need work and to build up key capabilities, including their ability to sustain themselves on the battlefield — from medical evacuations to fuel and ammunition — and to carry out combined arms operations. "The building of their capabilities will take time," Allen said, adding that he was "comfortable that our plan to do both these things is on track over time." The Afghan military will have to make do without requested weapons such as heavy tanks and F-16 fighter jets, but Allen said the equipment that they will receive should give them considerable firepower. They include converting MI-17 transport helicopters to gunships and providing Afghan combat units at all levels with mortars. He said the Afghans had to get used to the idea that they will not have the same air support in the future as they have today. Currently the coalition can provide air support to troops on the ground anywhere in Afghanistan within 12 minutes of a request. "They have to get used to their own resources being the firepower necessary," he said.

For prophecy gives evidence of the existence of God, and the Bible as His Word. How do you know, when you take the Bible, this is not a product of man's imagination? How do you know it's not just any book? How do you know that the Bible was written by men who desire simply wanted to write 1,500 years ago? What evidence is there that this book expresses the divine will of God? Prophecy is an evidence. No other book written by the man who can predict the future with accuracy that makes the Bible. Third, the prophecy explains the past and predicts the future. That is, is a link that connects the past with the future. Since the events of the past have been performed with marked precision. This gives me confidence to face the future. So the prophecy gives me confidence in God and His Word. All this gives me more confidence and security in the Bible as the Word of God. By the way, do we need confidence to face the future? There are many who are afraid to face the future. But we in studying the prophecies that we feel can strengthen solid confidence to face the uncertain future. Finally, the fourth reason. The prophecy discover the secrets of the Creator, in relation to how they should live their children to have a life full of joy. El profeta muestra una vez más lo que significa profecía. Es decir, es un medio que Dios usa para revelar el futuro. Para anticipar los sucesos que han de sobrevenir. Es la historia descrita por adelantado. Babilonia tenía trece dioses. Cuando Nabucodonosor conquistó a Jerusalén, trajo los vasos del templo del Dios de Israel y los puso en el templo de su dios “Bel Marduck”. El templo de este dios estaba en la llanura de Shinar. Al parecer, el Dios de Israel había sido derrotado. Pero ahora vemos que ese mismo Dios presenta uno de los más grandes desafíos. Además, dice que no hay otro igual a Él. Ninguno de los dioses falsos tenía la capacidad de predecir el futuro. Aquí en Daniel 2, vemos que estos dioses no pueden comunicar ninguna sabiduría al rey, ni revelar el sueño ni su interpretación. Esto es una prueba más de lo que dijo el profeta Isaías: “El es el verdadero y único Dios que conoce el futuro y que puede revelar lo porvenir”. Antes de seguir adelante con Daniel 2, quiero que veamos algunas razones por la cual Dios nos revela el futuro por medio de profecías. Primero, la profecía es una evidencia de la existencia de un Dios omnipotente que gobierna por encima de todo gobierno del mundo. Por eso, mientras más estudiamos la profecía, más confianza tenemos en ese Dios que nos revela el futuro por adelantado. Segundo, la profecía es una evidencia que muestra que la Biblia es la Palabra de Dios. Porque la profecía dá evidencia de la existencia de Dios, y de la Biblia como Su Palabra. ¿Cómo sabe usted, cuando toma la Biblia, que esta no es un producto de la imaginación del hombre? ¿Cómo sabe que no es un libro cualquiera? ¿Cómo sabe usted que la Biblia no fue escrita por simple deseo de hombres que quisieron escribir hace 1.500 años? ¿Qué evidencia tenemos que este libro expresa la voluntad divina de Dios? La profecía es una evidencia. No hay otro libro escrito por el hombre que pueda predecir el futuro con la precisión que lo hace la Biblia. Tercero, la profecía explica el pasado y predice el futuro. Es decir, es un eslabón que une el pasado con el futuro. Siendo que los eventos del pasado se han realizado con marcada precisión. Esto me da confianza para hacer frente al futuro. Entonces, la profecía me da confianza en Dios y en Su Palabra. Todo esto me da más confianza y más seguridad en la Biblia como la Palabra de Dios. De paso, ¿necesitamos confianza para hacer frente al futuro? Hay muchos que tienen miedo de hacerle frente al futuro. Pero nosotros al estudiar las profecías nos sentimos con esa confianza sólida que puede fortalecernos para hacer frente a ese futuro inseguro. Por último, la cuarta razón. La profecía descubre los secretos del Creador, en relación a como deben vivir sus hijos para tener una vida llena de gozo. Siendo que nos revela los acontecimientos que han de sobrevenir, nos ayuda para que nos preparemos para hacer frente a ese futuro. Aquí podemos ver una cosa más. La profecía afecta el estilo de vida diaria. Dios no ha revelado la profecía simplemente para que acumulemos conocimiento, sino para que conozcamos los eventos que nos esperan para los últimos días de la historia de esta tierra. Y mientras estudiamos el capítulo dos del libro de Daniel, debemos estar seguros que estamos estudiando una profecía que nos da confianza en Dios, en la veracidad de Su Palabra y en las profecías que nos enseñan como vivir en los tiempos en que vivimos. ¿Quien Eres Para tentar a Dios? Éxodo 20:04 Alega; No te harás ídolo, ni semejanza Alguna de Lo Que está arriba en el cielo, ni abajo en la tierra, ni en las aguas debajo de la tierra. __________________________________________________ En la Biblia, el profeta es alguien que habla en nombre de otros y, en la mayoría de los casos, uno que habla por Dios, que es el portavoz y representante. Sin embargo, el uso común hace, profeta es, casi exclusivamente, el que predice el futuro. Sin embargo, la predicción de eventos futuros es sólo una parte del mensaje del profeta, y no siempre incluido. En el Antiguo Testamento, el profeta se llama NABÍ, término que puede significar "que es llamado por Dios" y tiene el mandato de decirle a otros acerca de Dios. También llamado vidente, o que ve a través de la revelación divina, a veces en visiones y sueños reales, un mensaje que transmite Dios y que a su vez debe transmitir a los demás. Who are you to tempt God? Exodus 20:04 claims; You shall not make an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters under the earth. __________________________________________________ In the Bible, the prophet is one who speaks on behalf of others and, in most cases, one who speaks for God, who is the spokesman and representative. However, common usage does, prophet is, almost exclusively, which predicts the future. However, the prediction of future events is only part of the message of the prophet, and not always included. In the Old Testament, the prophet is called Nabi, a term that can mean "who is called by God" and is mandated to tell others about God. Also called a seer, or who sees through divine revelation, sometimes in visions and dreams real, a message that conveys God and that in turn must pass on to others. La expresión, “la letra mata, mas el espíritu vivifica” es un texto que muchos tuercen diciendo que “que estudiar no es necesario” __________________________________________________ Introducción. La Biblia dice en; __________________________________________________ 2 Corintios 3:7-11 A. 2 Cor. 3:1, “¿Comenzamos otra vez a recomendarnos a nosotros mismos? ¿O tenemos necesidad, como algunos, de cartas de recomendación para vosotros, o de recomendación de vosotros?” __________________________________________________ B. La primera respuesta es que los corintios eran su carta de recomendación (3:1-3). __________________________________________________ C. La segunda respuesta es que él es recomendado por el ministerio glorioso del Nuevo Pacto en contraste con la gloria del ministerio de Moisés bajo el Antiguo Pacto. __________________________________________________ D. 3:4, “Y tal confianza tenemos mediante Cristo para con Dios; 5 no que seamos competentes por nosotros mismos para pensar algo como de nosotros mismos, sino que nuestra competencia proviene de Dios, 6 el cual asimismo nos hizo ministros competentes de un nuevo pacto”. Al hablar de ser bien recomendado, humildemente lo atribuye no a sí mismo sino al Señor. __________________________________________________ I. Características del Nuevo Pacto. __________________________________________________ A. 3:6, “no de la letra, sino del espíritu (Espíritu, LBLA), porque la letra mata, mas el espíritu (Espíritu, LBLA) vivifica”. __________________________________________________ B. “La letra” es la ley de Moisés; “el espíritu” (Espíritu, LBLA; 3:18) es el evangelio. __________________________________________________ 1. La expresión, “la letra mata, mas el espíritu vivifica” es un texto que muchos tuercen diciendo que “la letra” es lo que la Biblia dice, y que “el espíritu” es la interpretación de cada persona de acuerdo a su propio razonamiento subjetivo (su intuición, imaginación, opinión o sentimiento). __________________________________________________ 2. Pero es obvio que “la letra” es la ley de Moisés porque Pablo habla de “el ministerio de muerte grabado con letras en piedras” (v. 7). Se refiere a los diez mandamientos grabados en piedra. __________________________________________________ II. El contraste entre la gloria del Antiguo Pacto y la del Nuevo Pacto. __________________________________________________ A. Es por esto que el ministerio de Pablo es glorioso. El contraste es significativo y muy importante. __________________________________________________ B. El ministerio del Antiguo Pacto es un ministerio de muerte, porque sólo condenaba a los pecadores sin proveer para ellos un salvador. __________________________________________________ C. El ministerio del Nuevo Pacto es un ministerio de justificación, porque a través de Cristo nuestro Salvador todos pueden ser justificados de sus pecados. __________________________________________________ III. Pablo afirma que el ministerio de Moisés era con gloria. __________________________________________________ A. Para ilustrar lo glorioso de su ministerio, primero habla de la gloria del ministerio de Moisés, pues en este ministerio algunos de los hermanos de Corinto se gloriaban. Pablo trata de este problema mayormente en la carta a las iglesias de Galacia, pero también en otras cartas (Rom., 2 Cor., Gál., Efes., Col., 1 y 2 Tim., Tito). __________________________________________________ B. Pablo no se avergonzaba del ministerio de Moisés. Habla de él con respeto y reverencia. 3:7, dice que el ministerio de Moisés “fue con gloria, tanto que los hijos de Israel no pudieron fijar la vista en el rostro de Moisés a causa de la gloria de su rostro”. Ex. 34:29, “Y aconteció que descendiendo Moisés del monte Sinaí con las dos tablas del testimonio en su mano, al descender del monte, no sabía Moisés que la piel de su rostro resplandecía, después que hubo hablado con Dios. 30 Y Aarón y todos los hijos de Israel miraron a Moisés, y he aquí la piel de su rostro era resplandeciente; y tuvieron miedo de acercarse a él”. __________________________________________________ C. En realidad los enemigos de Pablo que profesaban lealtad a Moisés adulteraban no solamente el evangelio, sino también la ley de Moisés, porque no la usaban correctamente. 1 Tim. 1:8, “Pero sabemos que la ley es buena, si uno la usa legítimamente”. Nunca fue el plan de Dios de que ciertos mandamientos y reglamentos de la ley de Moisés se mezclaran con el evangelio. Adulteraban la palabra tanto del Antiguo Testamento como la del Nuevo Testamento (4:2). __________________________________________________ IV. Pero el ministerio de Moisés era “ministerio de muerte”. __________________________________________________ A. 3:7, “Y si el ministerio de muerte grabado con letras en piedras fue con gloria, …”; 3:9, “Porque si el ministerio de condenación fue con gloria, mucho más abundará en gloria el ministerio de justificación”. __________________________________________________ 1. Se llamaba “ministerio de muerte” y “ministerio de condenación” porque condenaba al pecador y no había Salvador. __________________________________________________ 2. Ofrecían sacrificios de animales para expiar los pecados; sin embargo, leemos en Heb. 10:3, “Pero en estos sacrificios cada año se hace memoria de los pecados; 4 porque la sangre de los toros y de los machos cabríos no puede quitar los pecados”. __________________________________________________ B. En este sentido Pablo habla de “la letra” que “mata”. 3:6, “el cual asimismo nos hizo ministros competentes de un nuevo pacto, no de la letra, sino del espíritu; porque la letra mata, mas el espíritu vivifica”. __________________________________________________ V. El ministerio de justificación es más glorioso que el ministerio de la condenación. __________________________________________________ A. 3:7, “los hijos de Israel no pudieron fijar la vista en el rostro de Moisés a causa de la gloria de su rostro, la cual había de perecer, 8 ¿cómo no será más bien con gloria el ministerio del espíritu? 9 Porque si el ministerio de condenación fue con gloria, mucho más abundará en gloria el ministerio de justificación. 10 Porque aun lo que fue glorioso, no es glorioso en este respecto, en comparación con la gloria más eminente. 11 Porque si lo que perece tuvo gloria, mucho más glorioso será lo que permanece”. __________________________________________________ B. El ministerio de Pablo era el ministerio del Espíritu (el ministerio de justificación) y tiene más gloria porque sus efectos son más gloriosos. Ofrece una esperanza que no había bajo el ministerio de condenación. 3:12, “Así que, teniendo tal esperanza, usamos de mucha franqueza 13 y no como Moisés, que ponía un velo sobre su rostro, para que los hijos de Israel no fijaran la vista en el fin de aquello que había de ser abolido”. __________________________________________________ C. La gloria del ministerio de muerte no era duradera, pero la gloria del ministerio de justificación permanece. 3:11, “Porque si lo que perece tuvo gloria, mucho más glorioso será lo que permanece”. __________________________________________________ Conclusión. __________________________________________________ A. Por esta razón (su confianza en la gloria permanente de su ministerio) Pablo usaba “de mucha franqueza” (3:12). __________________________________________________ B. 3:13, “y no como Moisés, que ponía un velo sobre su rostro, para que los hijos de Israel no fijaran la vista en el fin de aquello que había de ser abolido. 14 Pero el entendimiento de ellos se embotó; porque hasta el día de hoy, cuando leen el antiguo pacto, les queda el mismo velo no descubierto, el cual por Cristo es quitado. 15 Y aun hasta el día de hoy, cuando se lee a Moisés, el velo está puesto sobre el corazón de ellos”. __________________________________________________ C.
